Our Mission
Under the Woods Foundations mission is to provide experiences that are unique, creative and adventurous for children that are “differently abled” (including but not limited to autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities) and their families. Under the Woods Foundation implements outdoor summer camps for children which incorporate creative activities, nature themes, family participation, and other related activities. Camp Under the Woods is a program that has been created through the Foundation. The Camp supports community development and awareness of children and their families who are impacted by autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities.

Philosophy

Camp Under the Woods philosophy is to provide a safe and enriched environment for “differently abled” children to have a camp experience that would not be typically available to them in their community. Our philosophy is to make sure that each child is able to grow in their development through activities and experiences that are new, adventurous, and unique.

Children who attend Camp are able to have their unique and or challenging needs met through the expertise and knowledge of the volunteers. Often parents will ask if Camp can work on specific educational goals. The Camp does not specifically work on educational goals though it strives to implement any strategy that support communication, social interaction, sensory needs, emotional support or any other identified need.

Camp Under the Woods serves a diverse population due to its central location with a mix of rural and urban areas covered. Camp Under the Woods has had campers from four counties in Upstate NY and neighboring states. Due to its close approximation to the 6 Flags Great Escape Amusement Park and the major resort area of Lake George parents have had the opportunity to visit these locations with other family members. Families have taken their week vacation to spend time in the Adirondacks of New York while their child has been at Camp. It is the only camp of its kind servicing “differently abled” children.
